Castles looked over small villages and farms. Castles were strong, tall structures protecting medieval knights and lords. Usually, castles would be built on top of hills or rocky cliffs, known as the motte style. A high fence, known as a bailey, would surround the actual towers making closed in courtyards. King William put up 100 fortresses and all were motte-and-bailey style. These medieval castles were mostly made of solid stone. Also with stone, lords would build a stone wall, or shell, to build around the top of the hill.
This picture is an example of what a castle would look like in medieval ages. It's built on a rocky cliff, like motte style, for protection purposes. The walls are thick and curved along with tall and few windows. The picture is not only a good example of a medieval castle but also a very pretty sight to look at!!

The castles entrance was the point where the castle was the weakest. To protect this point, the lord built a gatehouse including towers, bridges, and barriers. Gatehouses also had a drawbridge, a moat, or even an outer gatehouse. Castles take a huge amount of time to build and an even more amount of money to construct such a gigantic structure. It was very important to make these homes powerful because the people living or working inside depended on the castle’s protection.
